South African Sign Language and Deaf Culture Workshops

SLED offers two South African Sign Language courses, both accredited by the ETDP SETA:
  • South African Sign Language Stage 1 course 
  • South African Sign Language Stage 2 course

South African Sign Language Stage 1 course

This is a beginner course.  Each lesson is formally structured with South African Sign Language DVDs, games and activities used to make learning easy and enjoyable.  The lessons are taught by trained, qualified and experienced Deaf teachers. Students are expected to complete assignments between the lessons. These Self Study Assignments are an important and integral part of the course.  There are revision sessions, two formative assessments, feedback sessions and one final summative assessment.  Students are given a 140 page printed (English) manual and 2 South African Sign Language DVDs to support their learning. 

The course is taught through receptive, productive and interactive lessons.
The course is built around two SAQA Unit Standards at NQF Level 4

  • 115074 - Engage in short conversations with a Deaf person on a familiar topic using SASL (6 credits)
  • 115079 - Perform everyday communicative tasks using South African Sign Language (4 credits)

South African Sign Language Stage 2 course

This is an intermediate course and requires the learner to have achieved the two unit standards that make up SLED's Stage 1 course.  As with the Stage 1 course, the lessons are taught by trained, qualified and experienced Deaf teachers.  There are revision sessions, two formative assessments, feedback sessions and one final summative assessment.  Students are given a 170 page printed (English) manual and 4 South African Sign Language DVDs to support their learning. 

The course is taught through receptive, productive and interactive lessons.

The course is built around three SAQA Unit Standards at NQF Level 5 (a total of 13 credits)

  • 115813 - Hold conversations with Deaf individuals and groups of Deaf people on an unfamiliar topic using SASL (6 credits)
  • 115814 - Paraphrase and summarise signed monologues on familiar topics using South African Sign Language (4 credits)
  • 115803 - Explain complex processes to Deaf individuals and groups of Deaf people, using South African Sign Language (3 credits)
