SLED
focuses on building the capacity of Deaf adult SASL users in order
for them to become proficient trainers of SASL to hearing adults, and
of Deaf teachers and teaching assistants of Deaf children.
In
2010, work was initiated on the development of the "Train the Deaf
Trainer" programme which equips Deaf adults with a SASL
qualification, an appreciation of Deaf culture, history and education
and general facilitation skills. In 2010, SLED's work included
materials development and preparation; internal capacity building for
SLED Deaf staff members; and networking, selection and preparation of
potential Deaf trainees. Deaf facilitators of our SASL courses are
also trained in education methodology. An education DVD for the
training in teaching SASL was produced. SLED supported SASL access
for Deaf SASL facilitators in the South African Qualifications
Authority (SAQA) accredited Facilitation and Assessment Unit
Standards, in which they successfully qualified.
