XVI World Congress Of The World Federation Of The Deaf

The
historical XVI WORLD CONGRESS OF THE WORLD FEDERATION OF THE DEAF
took place from 18 to 24 July 2011 in Durban, South Africa. Our
entire SLED team attended the historical Congress - the first such
Congress in Africa.
It was an opportunity to share our
education materials with people from all over the world.

Professor Kristina Svartholm from Stockholm, addresses the WFD
Congress. Professor Svartholm will be back in South African in the
second week of September 2011 - this time in collaboration with the
Linguistics Section of the Department of English Language and
Literature at the University of Cape Town, in conjunction with UCT
Disability Unit and Sign Language Education and Development (SLED).
Professor Kristina Svartholm is from the Department of Linguistics
at the University of Stockholm, Sweden. She is widely acknowledged as
the leading expert in achieving literacy for the Deaf learner.

At the Congress, Fr Cyril Axelrod, who is Deaf and later in life also
became blind, meets Abram Moyaha and Modiegi Moime, whom he knew a
long time ago.

Shuaib Chalklin, UN Special Rapporteur on Disability, as well as
being the SLED Treasurer, addresses the WFD Congress.
|
A delegation of representatives from Deaf organisations across Africa, organised by the Africa Contact Group for Mental Health and Deafness, visited our SLED offices in Cape Town after the Congress.
